Context:
The City of Lakewood is a vibrant community that is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Area in Ohio. It has a mix of single-family homes, denser apartment blocks, and corridors of commercial activity running through the city.
Project Objective
Understanding that Lakewood is at risk for flooding, extreme temperatures, and severe winter storms, the City set out to develop a Climate Action Plan to prepare for these climate risks and hazards.
Working with Biohabitats, SSG developed a Climate Action Plan that involved the creation of a GHG inventory, future scenario modeling, and community engagement, with a focus on frontline communities impacted by climate change. This ensured that the resulting CAP met the City’s energy and emissions reduction goals while ensuring a just transition for all residents.
Outcomes
- Lakewood developed their first CAP, which was passed by the Lakewood City Council on May 1, 2023. The plan identifies actions that will allow the City to achieve its goal of using 100% renewable energy by 2035 and net zero emissions by 2050. The CAP was one of the first in the US to incorporate federal funding opportunities from the Infrastructure bill and the Inflation Reduction Act into the financial analysis of the plan.
