SSG worked with the City of Markham to develop the Community Energy Plan (CEP) for Markham Centre, a community in south-central Markham. The plan details actions to ensure future development of the area aligns with Markham’s goal of net-zero community emission by 2050.
Outcome:
The CEP identified opportunities for a further 88% reduction in emissions, a 67% reduction in energy consumption, and 58% of energy expenditure relative to if Markham continues with business as usual.
SSG’s analysis also highlighted three key takeaways:
Markham District Energy can achieve net-zero by 2050 if the local energy utility complete their existing plan for wastewater heat recovery, and convert electric district energy systems to run on renewable energy.
Solar panel use needs to be maximized. This means designing for and protecting solar access, ensuring optimizing sun exposure of rooftop photovoltaic panels and building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV).
Buildings need to be built to net-zero standards starting now. Net-zero standards will keep energy demand and consumption needs low so that they can be met with renewable energy sources.
Status:
The CEP is currently under review by the City. To read more about the project, visit the Markham Community Energy Plan Information site.
