Timeline 2015-2018
Project Overview
To help the City of Red Deer, Alberta envision and assess its options for a low carbon future, SSG developed its community energy and emissions inventory, forecast and Community Energy and Emissions Plan (CEEP). The project also helped the City complete the community component of PCP Milestones One, Two, and Three. The project included an analysis of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and modelling a BAU scenario and alternative scenarios: Low Effort, Moderate Effort and Ambitious. Energy, emissions and financial modelling was performed on a suite of 26 building, transportation, renewable energy, waste, and land-use policies and actions to assess their contributions towards a Modest Effort emissions reduction goal. A comprehensive communications, stakeholder and community engagement process was integral to the project. Red Deer’s CEEP gives guidance on achieving a low carbon future through renewable energy projects, home energy retrofits, transportation mode shifting, and developing compact, complete communities, while demonstrating the magnitude of the challenge when a city’s electricity supply is fossil fuel based.
