Project Overview
SSG led an interdisciplinary team of policy analysts, engineers and strategists to analyze waste to energy options and the current waste to energy policy environment in BC. Seventy provincial and regional policies relating to waste, energy, climate and emissions were analysed and mapped in GEPHI network analysis software in a whole systems analysis to illustrate the relationships between policies, whether they reinforced each other or were contradictory. An international scan of waste to energy strategies was completed, with extensive interviews with technical experts in a number of countries. Detailed archetypes for different waste management strategies were developed and analysed against the BC policy environment to illustrate which approaches are supported or discouraged. Greenhouse gas emissions were calculated for each archetype. Recommendations for the waste to energy policy environment were identified.
